Morocco refused to go out. After trailing to Cody Gakpo's second-half goal for most of the match, the Atlas Lions equalised deep into added time, survived extra time, and then held their nerve in the penalty shootout to eliminate the Netherlands 3-2 — with Yassine Bounou making the decisive save and Ismael Saibari scoring the winning kick.

A Night of Moroccan Dominance — Without the Reward
From the first whistle at Estadio BBVA, Morocco were the better side. Controlling around 70% of possession throughout the match, Mohamed Ouahbi's team pressed aggressively and played with confidence and purpose. Achraf Hakimi pushed forward relentlessly from right back, Brahim Díaz pulled the strings between the lines, and Ismael Saibari was a constant threat up front.
But the Netherlands had a plan — and it was a defensive one.
Ronald Koeman lined his side up with a five-man defence, leaving both Tijjani Reijnders and Donyell Malen out of the starting XI. Their mission was to frustrate, absorb pressure, and punish Morocco on the counter.
For 72 minutes, it looked like it might work.
Gakpo Breaks the Deadlock

Diop — A Hero in Stoppage Time
With the match deep into stoppage time and Morocco facing elimination, Issa Diop — the Fulham centre-back who has been solid throughout the tournament — arrived at the far post to meet a corner and headed the ball into the net.
90+. 1-1. Estadio BBVA erupted.
It was the kind of goal that defines World Cups. The Dutch were devastated. Morocco were reborn.
Extra Time: Goalless, Breathless
Both teams had chances to win it in extra time. Saibari drove at the Dutch defence repeatedly. Hakimi's crossing was relentless. But Verbruggen, outstanding all night, kept the Netherlands alive.
At the other end, Bounou was alert to everything the Dutch threw at him.
After 120 minutes, nothing separated them. It would go to penalties.
The Shootout: Bounou Delivers Again
Morocco won the shootout 3-2.
The moment that will be remembered forever came when Crysencio Summerville stepped up for the Netherlands, needing to score to keep the Dutch alive — and Bounou dived brilliantly to his right to make the save.
Ismael Saibari, calm and composed, walked up and stroked the winning penalty into the corner.
